Autumn Balance: 5 Ayurvedic Habits for Vata Season

As the leaves turn and the air in Montreal gets crisp and dry, many of us feel it in the body: restless sleep, dry skin, cold hands, a busy mind. In Ayurveda, autumn is Vata season, a time when the qualities of cold, dry, light and moving are strongest. The good news is that a few simple habits can bring you back to warmth and steadiness.
1. Keep a steady daily rhythm
Vata loves routine. Try to wake up, eat and go to bed at roughly the same times each day. Even a regular bedtime alone can make your evenings calmer and your sleep deeper.
2. Choose warm, cooked, nourishing food
Swap cold salads and iced drinks for soups, stews, root vegetables, oatmeal and warm spices like ginger, cinnamon and cumin. A cup of warm water or herbal tea in the morning is a gentle way to start the day.
3. Try a warm oil self-massage
Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic oil massage, is one of my favourite autumn rituals. Warm a little sesame or sunflower oil, massage it into your skin for 5 to 10 minutes before a warm shower, and finish with your feet. It softens dry skin and helps you feel grounded.
4. Stay warm and covered
Protect your neck, ears and lower back from wind and cold. A scarf and warm socks do more for your comfort in October than you might think.
5. Slow down your breath
When your mind races, sit for three minutes and make each exhale a little longer than your inhale. This simple practice signals safety to your nervous system and is easy to do before sleep.
